What Is Freedom Academy?
Freedom Academy is a K-12, non-campus-based private school in Maine, sometimes referred to as an umbrella school. We serve families who educate their children at home and want the structure of enrollment through a recognized private school.
Since 2001, Freedom Academy has supported families who value educational independence, flexibility and parental control. We believe parents are best positioned to make decisions about their children's education and should have substantial freedom in choosing how, what and where their children learn.
Some families use a structured curriculum. Others prefer a more flexible, child-led or unschooling approach. Freedom Academy does not require families to use a particular curriculum or educational philosophy.
We believe learning extends well beyond textbooks and classrooms. Education can take place through reading, discussion, travel, projects, work, hobbies, nature, community activities and everyday life.
How Freedom Academy Works
Students are enrolled with Freedom Academy as private-school students while continuing to receive their education at home.
Parents remain responsible for directing their children's education, including choosing curriculum, materials and teaching methods. Freedom Academy provides the administrative school structure, handles required school reporting and maintains educational records.

Transcripts and diplomas are available for additional fees.
Freedom Academy offers annual and year-round enrollment.

- Printable student and teacher identification cards
- Administrative support when needed

About the Administrator
Rebecca Richard has served as administrator of Freedom Academy since 2022. She and her husband have homeschooled their eight children for more than two decades. Some of their children have gone on to college or entered the workforce, while they continue to homeschool two children.
With more than 20 years of homeschooling experience and 10 years of experience leading a local homeschool support group, Rebecca brings a practical understanding of home education to her work with Freedom Academy families. She is also a writer and local journalist, with experience researching, explaining and communicating information clearly. Her focus is helping families navigate homeschooling in Maine while preserving the flexibility and independence that make home education appealing.
