About Freedom Academy
Freedom Academy is a Maine private school that serves families who educate their children at home. Families remain responsible for the day-to-day education of their children, while Freedom Academy provides the private-school enrollment structure and handles the required school reporting.
Freedom Academy exists to give families another way to educate their children at home while retaining control over curriculum, teaching methods and the overall direction of their children’s education.
Why “Freedom Academy”?
The name reflects our belief in educational freedom and the right of families to make meaningful decisions about how their children are educated.
We are grateful for the generations of homeschooling families who helped establish and protect home education as a viable option, and we seek to preserve that freedom for the families we serve today.
Enrollment and Paperwork
Families enrolling with Freedom Academy should not also file a Maine Notice of Intent for home instruction for the same child and school year.
Freedom Academy handles the required private-school enrollment reporting. Families transitioning from Maine home instruction to Freedom Academy may contact us if they need help understanding the process.
When speaking with your local school district, it is important to explain that your child is enrolled in a private school through Freedom Academy.
Although your child is educated at home, Freedom Academy enrollment is not the same as Maine’s home-instruction/Notice of Intent option. Referring to your child simply as “homeschooled” can sometimes create confusion because school officials may then expect a Notice of Intent or other home-instruction paperwork.
If questions arise, families may contact Freedom Academy for help explaining their enrollment status.
Educational Approach
Freedom Academy does not prescribe a single curriculum or homeschooling method. Families may use structured curricula, eclectic approaches, child-led learning, unschooling or other educational methods that fit their children and family.
We are available, when possible, to help families with curriculum choices, course planning and general homeschooling questions. Because Freedom Academy is itself operated by a homeschooling family, response times may occasionally vary.
Christian Worldview
Freedom Academy is rooted in following Jesus and in Christian principles of faith, family, service and personal responsibility.
Enrollment is open to families regardless of faith, and families are not required to use a particular religious curriculum.

While it is not required for enrollment with Freedom Academy, we also recommend that homeschooling families consider membership in the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).

About the Administrator
Rebecca Richard has served as administrator of Freedom Academy since 2022. She and her husband have homeschooled their eight children for more than two decades. Some of their children have gone on to college or entered the workforce, while they continue to homeschool two children.
With more than 20 years of homeschooling experience and 10 years of experience leading a local homeschool support group, Rebecca brings a practical understanding of home education to her work with Freedom Academy families. She is also a writer and local journalist, with experience researching, explaining and communicating information clearly. Her focus is helping families navigate homeschooling in Maine while preserving the flexibility and independence that make home education appealing.
