Who We Are: Freedom Academy is a private school that exists under "Option 2" in the homeschooling laws in the state of Maine. This allows parents to still be the teachers at home. Freedom Academy simply takes care of all the enrollment paperwork for your child. In the eyes of the state and school districts, Freedom Academy is considered a private school. However, each "classroom" is each family's home and each "teacher" is the parents in that home. This is an option many homeschoolers have used for years in the state.
Why are we called Freedom Academy? This name was chosen due to a number of reasons. The largest being that we are grateful to have the freedom to school our children in a method we choose. Many families across the globe are fighting for the chance to educate their children at home. We are thankful to the pioneers in this country who, over thirty years ago, paved the way for this generation to learn at home.
Filing Paperwork: If you are enrolling in Freedom Academy, do not file a Letter of Intent or a Subsequent Letter of Intent. All necessary paperwork will be filed by us! Please contact us, using the "contact" tab on the website. Let us know if you are coming from a letter of intent (Option 1) to Freedom Academy (Option 2) and we'll help you navigate the transition.
If you would like to read the guidelines set out by the Maine Department of Education that pertain to how a REPS should be run, you may click here.
While it is not a requirement, it is highly recommended that you be a member of HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association). We can offer you a discount code that will take $15 off your yearly membership. Just use the contact tab to ask us for it.
Freedom Academy does not dictate your course of study for your child, nor do we tell you how to homeschool. We will, however, offer up any support we can on your homeschooling journey including helping you to plan out a course of study, what curriculum might work best, and how to meet all laws and guidelines pertaining to homeschooling in Maine. Please remember that we are also still homeschooling and it may take us time to respond to requests for support.
It is important to note, when discussing your decision to join Freedom Academy with local school officials you should say your child is enrolled in a "private school." If you say you are homschooling, this may create confusion since you will not be filing the paperwork they look for, namely a Letter of Intent.
We are a school with a Christian worldview and do profess a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We will not discriminate, however, based on anyone's faith.
